As the largest city in the County, it is the center of focus for law enforcement and the area where most of the county’s arrests take place. Arrests in the county are primarily carried out by the Sheriff’s Department, but the State Police also have a countywide presence. If you have been charged with a crime or investigated for a crime here, chances are that it was by the Sheriff’s Department.

The Sheriff has numerous special divisions that are responsible for investigating certain crimes. The largest of these divisions is the narcotics enforcement section. The narcotics enforcement section of the Charles County Sheriff is responsible for most of the drug arrests in Waldorf. This section includes the major narcotics unit and the street enforcement unit. The major narcotics unit handles more complex and large scale drug trafficking investigations. In 2011 this unit closed two major drug operations that resulted in the seizure of over $300,000 worth of marijuana and cocaine, and numerous handguns. Another Waldorf drug bust resulted in the seizure of close to $80,0000 worth of heroin. Most of the people arrested in these busts were undoubtedly charged with drug distribution and drug trafficking. The street narcotics unit deals with smaller operations and conducts numerous undercover buy bust operations, which result in arrests for crimes such as marijuana possession and cocaine possession. The street narcotics unit also makes numerous arrests for possession of drugs with intent to distribute, and drug sale.

The Charles County Sheriff also has a firearms tracking unit, which conducts firearms possession hearings and investigations. This unit is responsible for recovering over 200 illegally possessed firearms, some of which were possessed by Waldorf gun owners that lost their right to possess a firearm due to a domestic violence protective order. Other special units include the financial crimes unit, which is responsible for identity theft, forgery, and fraud. In 2011 the financial crimes unit made 86 arrests. The Sheriff’s special victims unit investigates most sex crimes including sexual assault, child abuse, and child pornography. This unit also conducts investigations to determine whether registered sex offenders in and around the city are in compliance. Other key units of the Sheriff’s Office include the robbery unit, and the major crimes unit, which investigates shootings and homicide cases.

"I am writing this letter to thank you for doing such a great job in my case. If it were not for what you did I would still be in jail right now. My family and I are very grateful I have a second chance at life now, and if it wouldn't be like this if you were not so good at what you do. Thank you again Benjamin!" T.S.

"Thank you for all the time and effort that you put into defending my case. You were willing to fight for me when nobody else would believe my story, and you did not back down from the prosecutor. Another lawyer would have urged me to plead guilty, but you were willing to fight for me, and in the end justice was served. I appreciate everything you did and wish you all the best." Fred D.
